Corydon Orchestra

Founded in 1991 by its conductor and Artistic Director Matthew Best, Corydon Orchestra has rapidly established itself as one of London's finest orchestras performing an extensive and varied repertoire both in the concert hall and recordings. Their musicians rank among the finest instrumentalists currently in the UK. Their performances have been described as "one of those rivetingly rewarding experiences when you go to a concert and find yourself engrossed from beginning to end" Daily Telegraph.

After its debut performance in a series of Mozart concerts with the Corydon Singers in London at St.John's, Smith Square, the Corydon Orchestra returned there the following year with a compelling orchestral programme which included Strauss Metamorphosen. It went on to make debuts at the Royal Festival Hall in 1993 with a performance of Bruckner Te Deum and Beethoven Symphony No.9 and, at the BBC Promenade concerts in 1994, with a programme including music by Bruckner and Robert Simpson.

Appearances in London with the Corydon Singers also include a major concert at Westminster Cathedral in October 1996 to celebrate the centenary of the death of Bruckner which included a performance of Symphony No.7. They also appear at many of the major British festivals.

Corydon Orchestra has an impressive and highly regarded discography. Recordings on the Hyperion label include works by Beethoven, Berlioz, Bruckner, Cherubini, Finzi, Vaughan Williams and Villa-Lobos. The press have described "Matthew Best's magnificent series of recordings" as "one of the jewels in Hyperion's crown …the Corydon team seems incapable of producing a dud disc" Classic CD. The Beethoven Cantatas CD recorded last season is the most recent of several Corydon recordings to have been runner up at the Gramophone Awards. Many of its recordings are judged in the music press to be the standard recommended version.
