The English String Orchestra was founded in 1980 by its Artistic/Music Director William Boughton and rapidly established itself as an ensemble of international distinction. The String Orchestra has achieved an enviable reputation for recording the music of 20th century English composers, and concert performances of this repertoire play a significant role in the ESO's schedule. Foreign touring also forms an integral part of the orchestra's work; recent tours have included Italy, Switzerland, Germany, Norway, Lithuania and Greece. The English String Orchestra is currently commissioning, playing and recording the music of composers such as Nicholas Maw, Peter Sculthorpe, Toro Takemitsu and Jonathan Lloyd.

After more than thirty successful recordings of the string orchestra, demand grew for a larger ensemble to pursue more of the English repertoire. In 1989 a symphonic counterpart was formed and the English Symphony Orchestra came into being; subsequently developing in the "classical" tradition, with orchestral forces similar to those of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The English String & Symphony Orchestras now have a discography of more than 50 recordings on Nimbus Records. Resident in Malvern, Worcestershire since 1993, the ESO gives a series of string and symphony concerts in Malvern and its environs, as well as running a comprehensive programme of education and community work. In addition, the orchestras regularly give concerts in Cheltenham, Bridgnorth, Ludlow, Leominster, Worcester, Gloucester and at Symphony Hall in Birmingham, and continue to pursue a busy recording and touring schedule.
